Music
? and the Mysterians were perhaps the first band to be described as punk rock and also may be the first Latino rock group to have a general audience #1 hit record.

Border Music - Excellent fodder for the "multicultural" classroom. This site is courtesy of the University of Texas at Austin. Also links to: Orquesta Tejana: the Formative Years, San Antonio's Conjuntos in the 1950s, Narciso Martínez, The Women, Norteño Acordeon: The First Recordings, Narciso Martínez "El Huracan del Valle": His first recordings 1936-1937.

Son Del Barrio - San Francisco musical artists whose work reinterprets Latin American musical traditions through the filter of the multiethnic U.S. barrio experience. Live Audio!

Dr. Loco's Rockin' Jalapeño Band - One of the best Chicano bands ever. Puro Party! This San Francisco State University Professor sure knows how to blow sax. Slow loading site that needs updating.

La Peña - A multicultural performing arts center and restaurant in Berkeley, California that presents local, national and international music, theater, dance, film and visual artists whose works examine contemporary social issues and are reflective of a wide variety of cultural traditions.

Marc Anthony - Marc Anthony is the number one selling tropical/salsa artist in the world. He has been described as the quintessential urban Latino Renaissance man. (Turn up the audio for this site!)

LANIC - The University of Texas offers up excellent Latino music links. All this and more from the preeminent school for Latin American Studies.

Mento Buro - (MP3) Mento Buru is an explosive 8-piece band that cleverly combines Latin Jazz, Jamaican Ska, Funk and Reggae. This eclectic mixture creates a refreshing new musical experience not soon to be forgotten. Since it's inception in 1991, Mento Buru's sound has excited audiences of all ages. The charisma, stage exhibition and diverse musical skills of the band have built their loyal following

Latin Music On-Line! - Large site devoted to Latin music. Recently upgraded and definitely worth a visit!

  • Rounder Records - Tex-Mex music and much more!
  • La Onda Network - Information about Tex-Mex music...check it out! There used to be many other Tejano sites, but many have disappeared!
  • SalsaWeb - LA Salseros love to dance!
  • Poncho Sanchez - Master conguero from Tejas now in L-A. Poncho offers up an eclectic mix of funk, salsa and jazz. If I had the cash to hire a great band for party I would hire Poncho.
  • Alberto's Night Club - Latinos (etc.!) from Stanford University and other points in the Bay Area enjoy dancing to an eclectic mix of bands in downtown Mountain View, California.
